Question by Steve: Any way to fix my Vitamix 5000 blender?
I have a vitamix 5000 blender and it broke today, and am not sure how to fix it. It’s worked fine for a few months but all of a sudden it stops blending after a few seconds. If you turn it back on in a bit it works fine again for a few seconds. What could cause this, and is there any fix that won’t cost a ton of money? It was a used gift from my grand father so I don’t have the warranty, and a fix from the company costs almost 0.
If it needs to be trashed, can you recommend a good blender? Previously gotten ones from good will, target, wal-mart and the likes break in a few days usually or can’t blend ice for crap.

It sounds like your mixer blades are freezing up when you crush the ice. Maybe try to use a higher speed when you start your process.
If this happens to you often, might you be better off buying a commercial brand. Look for a restaurant supply house in the area. good luck.

anyway – the smoothie tastes best when its really cold, and the vitamixer crushes everything pretty fast, so the drink IS ice cold if you drink it within the first several minutes.
After that the ice does “melt” and the drink will get warmer…
its all about getting different colors of produce each day? sorry i had to lol at that.
so wait, why did you add the ice? pretty much if you blend ice that much, it will just turn into bits so small they will just melt into the recipe.
I’m sure it does but ya gotta believe me – I’ve made the drink thousands of times + any less makes the drink unpalatable – to me at least. It makes 4 full 16oz glasses, so it’s only 3/8″ tsp per serving =)

What’s happening is that you are probably overloading/overheating a relay switch. This happened to my vitamix and I had it repaired. The thing I was doing wrong was starting it with solid/ice cubes at the bottom of the container….what you want to do is put your liquids in first so that when it powers on it isn’t working against direct resistance.
You will not find a better blender anywhere I guarantee it. I own 2 vitamix. If you need to get it repaired go to your local Restaurant Supply store like Ace Mart or Restaurant Depot and ask if they do repairs or recommend someone in town.
Another tip: Try pulsing the ice at first just to get the big chunks broken down then turn it to full speed.
